Health First: Wisdom from my 88 year old Grandmother

I asked my grandmother, “is money important?”. She responded with the english translated, “money is important. But, Health is number 1. With a healthy body and mind you can make money, but without it you can’t have anything. The capacity to live first”. Now you, as the relentless go getter might say, “why the fuck would I care about anything other than money, paper is the only thing that matters! Capitalism BABY!.”(of course I don’t think that poorly of you). To this imaginary villain I conjure the belief that a great wisdom and understanding of life’s principals and nuances are granted to those that have persevered through the meat grinder we call human existence. A wisdom that finds those who flash a toothless smile at the steel toed boot of life which keeps kicking and kicking and kicking, and stomping, and stomping, and stomping, at one’s spirit. My grandmother grew up in third world poverty, to a single mother who cared for her and her sister. As a women in a male dominated society such as China, she was not afforded the opportunities for education as her male compatriots, despite scoring higher on tests. Her family was also too poor to support her. Despite all the odds stacked against her, she was able to outwork and outproduce, eventually landing her in a higher government position. This allowed her to put her sister through school. Nowadays, She lives in North America where she enjoys a beautiful family, with great-grand children. She often practices tai chi in the early mornings and scribes Chinese letters throughout the day. She loves art.  Why am I telling you this? I am telling you to make the point that she is someone who has faced the harshness and suffering of reality, but came out magnanimous. Her words have validity.

So why is health the most important. Well, think about it this way. If you’re a multi-millionaire but spend most of your time in a hospital bed, what was the point of making all that money? You stress yourself out, you are unhappy, all for the pursuit of a better ideal that you can’t even enjoy. The psychology of why we pursue money would be a good discussion for another article. Okay so you are not hospitalized, the alternative of neglecting your health is not functioning optimally. You may wake up every day with aches and pains or brain fog. Your quality of life is not what it could be. However, if you invest in your health and well-being, the dividends that it pays are: the ability to work more hours and do more in those hours. Make more money! Your experience of life is also heightened because you are not hurting all the time from inflammation this sore joint that.  This was a less mentally taxing post for me to write, but I felt that the message needed to be shared.

Until next time,
